Garden

ISOLA BELLA

Famous throughout the world, the Italian baroque garden of Isola Bella is a perfect combination of art and nature.
At the center stands the Teatro Massimo: an evocative architectural construction consisting of ten terraces that form a pyramid adorned with fountains, obelisks and statues. It is possible to climb to the top of the theater on a large terrace, which with its 37 meters above the lake level is the privileged place to enjoy the panorama of the Borromean Gulf. Since 2002, the Isola Bella garden has been part of the prestigious British Royal Horticultural Society.

A fascinating journey inside the princely residence passes through over 20 historic rooms, including the Throne Room, the New Hall, the Music Room, the Napoleon Room and the Ballroom. A rare example of an entirely preserved Baroque collection in Northern Italy is the Galleria dei Quadri or of General Berthier which houses a collection of 130 works, among which authors such as Boltraffio, Giampietrino, Daniele Crespi stand out. On the lower floor, almost level with the lake, there are six caves covered with pebbles, tuff, stucco and marble originally built to amaze and refresh the guests of the Palazzo.

With its eight hectares of extension, Isola Madre is the largest of the Borromean Islands. The botanical heritage and the strong exotic imprint have made it "the most voluptuous place seen in the world" (cit. Gustave Flaubert).
From an agricultural estate with plantations of vines, figs, olive trees, chestnuts and cherry trees to the creation of Italian-style terraces with oranges, lemons and cedars. Starting in the nineteenth century, the park was transformed: thanks to the particular microclimate, rare botanical species from all over the world found their habitat in this magnificent English garden. CASTELLI DI CANNERO

In 1519 Ludovico Borromeo settled on the islets in front of Cannero and Cannobio. Exactly five centuries later the work for the restoration of the Castles of Cannero resumed.
Three years is the time needed to transform them into a museum that will tell the story of the castle through the centuries, thanks to the artifacts found during the archaeological excavation campaigns and with the help of appropriate information technologies.

The Castles of Cannero can be admired from the lake with a daily excursion on our Giada boat.

The excursion lasts about 1 hour with departure and arrival at the pier in front of the Park Hotel Italia. While sailing you can enjoy a pleasant aperitif. You will also be given a booklet with the history of the Castles and Villas and before departure a guide will illustrate the route. All at a cost of 15 euros per person.

MUSEO DEL PAESAGGIO

Born in 1909 as a Historical Artistic Museum of Verbano and the adjacent valleys by the will of Antonio Massara. In 1914 it assumed the current name of Landscape Museum, with the aim of encouraging the study of the natural and artistic beauties of the region and promoting its protection, and found a new location in the seventeenth-eighteenth-century Viani-Dugnani building owned by the municipality. Currently Palazzo Viani Dugnani, completely renovated in its layout, houses the painting and sculpture collections. The most consistent and significant nucleus of the art gallery is represented by Lombard and Piedmontese painting of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries with the important works of Guido Boggiani, Arnaldo Ferraguti, Daniele Ranzoni and Mario Tozzi. The sculpture section includes the plaster cast gallery which houses 340 works by the impressionist sculptor Paolo Troubetzkoy (1866-1938) and the significant groups of works by Giulio Branca (1850-1926) - representative of the nineteenth-century celebratory and historical re-enactment sculpture - and Arturo Martini (1889 -1947), considered the most important Italian sculptor between the two wars.

The Landscape Museum is a cultural institution deeply linked to the territory of Lake Maggiore and its back valleys. This bond, which is the basis of its constitution, has been consolidated in more than a century of life and is also the foundation of its mission. The main exhibition site of the Museum is Palazzo Viani Dugnani in Verbania Pallanza, in Via Ruga, 44, which houses the Troubetzkoy Gipsoteca, the sculpture collection, the Pinacoteca and temporary exhibitions.
